CARNAVAL DO SILÊNCIO

It is not Pernambuco with its mesmerizing seas that draws us. Nor Olinda, of the Brazilian frevo rhythm and floating sensuality.

Carnival, happening through the exuberant scenario of this northeastern Brazilian state, this carnival marked by cultural diversity, by a loud and silky kind of cheer… It is not it.

What draws us is a presence only felt by those who tread the paths leading to the sugarcane.

It´s there, from the backwoods that emerges from the Zona da Mata, a myth born from men, from them only. A strong creature, a warrior dressed in vivid colors armed with his spear, a cry silenced by the white carnation firmly tucked in his mouth. He is coming from the deep woods, from the sugarcane fields. He is the Caboclo de Lança, or the caboclo with a spear, reborn every year during the Soundless Carnival
